A DARKER SKIN TONES MASTERCLASS
1st Oct 2020
While the additional melanin protects against photo-aging damage and makes the skin more elastic, darker skin tones have a heightened sensitivity to inflammation which can result in hyperpigmentation, breakouts and other dysfunctions. These specific skin needs and challenges formed the topic of conversation for Dr. Barbara Sturm’s latest Darker Skin Tones Masterclass. Moderated by Shalwah Evans, Associate Beauty Editor at Essence, the intimate panel discussion featured celebrity hair and makeup artist Christiana Cassell, entrepreneur, international fashion model and activist Pritika Swarup and professional boxer and activist Ramla Ali.
During the conversation, the panelists reflected on their own skincare journeys and individual experiences; from the challenges of finding a skincare routine to fit the active lifestyle of an athlete to the importance of working with, rather than against, natural skin tones as a makeup artist. Dr. Barbara Sturm also shared a comprehensive skincare routine for melanin-rich skin and discussed the ingredient science behind the products in her DARKER SKIN TONES collection.
The panel concluded with a conversation about inclusivity and diversity within the beauty industry, and the changes that are still required. “On a scale of one to five, I think we’re at a two,” said Pritika Swarup. “But I think there’s these cultural shifts going on where people know we need to refocus and change what we are putting forward in terms of beauty.”
